“Things can’t be any better?”
There are processes defined and followed by every organization for all the work they execute. This is something the software service industry swears by.
I agree that process is important. It most definitely gives you an accepted approach to a task. It lays down the “tried and tested” rules of execution. It measures almost everything quantifiable in the project.
Can’t possibly go wrong with it, huh?
Well, maybe not, as long as whatever you are executing is exactly the same as the last successful project executed with the same defined processes. But, how often is that true?
Most people who would have executed more than two projects would feel that the projects are like fingerprints. No two seem alike.
Add it to our mix of different technologies, domains, products, tools, and organizational & customer environment influences and you get a thousand permutations and combinations of project types/styles.
That being said, processes play an important part of any successful project. They also contribute in a major way to overhead when not done right.
